Fitness for 50 Year Olds

Posted: August 13, 2018

Anyone can train a 25 year old to get stronger right? But fitness for 50 year olds and aging with strength, is MY passion. When you empower someone that is entering the second half of their lives, then strength, balance and confidence is key.

I have been coaching people over 50 to look forward to the future. Most people that are in their 50’s fear many movements due to lack of 4 things:

  • Strength
  • Balance
  • Confidence
  • Mobility

Strength is imperative as we age, or we will not be able to take care of ourselves. We must perform functional strength training moves at least 2 times weekly so that we don’t end up with “sarcopenia”. That is the medical word for age-related muscle loss.

Balance is also a huge component of falling and not being mindful of our surroundings. When we are not sure on our feet, we have less balance and coordination.

Confidence to take on adventure is a key in longevity. If we regularly engage in activity and functional strength moves, we can enjoy travel, hiking, and life with movement.

Mobility is key in being able to move forward, lift objects, twist and turn without hurting ourselves.

These 4 keys are components in fitness for 50 year olds, that will take you through each decade.

Find a trainer that specializes in training individuals that are over 50. However, don’t just plan on using light weights and sitting on a machine. That will not give you results you need.

Functional movement patters will have you bending, squatting, pushing, pulling, lifting and reaching your own body weight, and then a heavier weight if you are being trained in the right way.

We have a saying with some of my clients “NO GEEZERS” here! Just strong-minded and bodied individuals that plan on taking care of themselves long into each next decade!
